Prologue

Nepal is famous for trekking, but treating the country as nothing more than a trail map misses most of what makes it interesting.

Kathmandu alone can fill several days with architecture, food, courtyards, temples, craft traditions and neighborhoods that feel completely different from one another. Pokhara offers a much slower rhythm, with lakeside mornings, mountain views and short countryside walks that do not require turning your holiday into an expedition.

Then there is Lumbini, Chitwan, Mustang, Bandipur, Patan and dozens of smaller places where the experience is less about reaching a summit and more about spending time somewhere properly.

Trekking is still one of Nepal’s great experiences. It just does not need to define every trip.

For many travelers, the best journey is a mix: a little culture, some nature, a few active days, good food and enough space in the itinerary to actually notice where you are.
